Public Notice: Intersection Improvements at Hwy 119 and Grants Mill Road
Jefferson County is working with ALDOT on project ATRP2-37-2025-37 to improve the intersection at SR-119 and Grants Mill Road in Jefferson County. We are seeking citizen input on the proposed improvements described below.
Project Overview
- SR-119 is a north–south principal arterial, providing regional connectivity from the City of Alabaster in Shelby County (U.S. 31) to the City of Leeds in Jefferson County (U.S. 78).
- Grants Mill Road functions as a local collector road, serving nearby residential neighborhoods and providing access to commercial areas along the interstate, as well as to recreation sites, conservation lands, and places of worship.
The existing intersection is currently a two-way stop-controlled (TWSC) configuration, with stop control on Grants Mill Road and free-flow movement on SR-119. This intersection experiences operational deficiencies due to:
- High traffic volumes
- Limited sight distance
- High approach speeds along SR-119
Traffic congestion and queuing are common during morning and afternoon peak hours.
Proposed Solution
This project aims to address the operational and safety concerns at the intersection by reconfiguring it into a modern roundabout. The roundabout is expected to:
- Improve traffic flow
- Reduce the likelihood of severe crashes
- Decrease vehicle emissions by minimizing idle time
