Due to supply chain issues and printing delays with our outside printing vendor, there is a delay in the mailing of the property tax notices for the 2022 tax year. We anticipate having the billing notices in the mail by late October. Please note, property taxes are not deemed late until after December 31, 2022, and will be considered on time if paid or postmarked on or before January 3, 2023, because of the New Year’s Holiday. John T. Smallwood is a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. He earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, completed additional studies at Samford University and earned his Juris Doctorate from the Birmingham School of Law in 1992.
J.T. was elected in the general election held in November, 2002. He has managed and consulted in numerous state and local campaigns.
He brings to the Tax Collector's Office an extensive background in law and business. He served as Law Firm Administrator and as a lecturer in Law and Ethics. Additionally, he brings a common sense approach to solving problems, which was honed while being a small business owner.

Eric S. Burks

Eric S. Burks is a native of Montgomery, Alabama, and a longtime resident of Jefferson County. Educationally, Burks holds degrees in engineering, education, and public administration from the United States Air Force Academy, the University of Alabama, Auburn University at Montgomery, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Burks' work experience covers over thirty-five years of managerial positions, in engineering, business development, and state and local government including over 12 years as Chief Deputy in the Tax Collector's office.
Burks' previous work experience includes engineering positions with Ford Motor Company, Northrop Advanced Systems Division, and The California Manufacturing Technology Center. In addition, his prior business development positions held include the following: Workforce Development Coordinator-Bessemer State Technical College, Assistant Director-The Alabama Development Office, Associate Director-The Center for Rural Development, and Vice President of Business Development-Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Burks serves as the Elections Coordinator for the Jefferson County Democratic Conference, President of the Concerned Citizens of the Bessemer Cut-Off, and as a member of the State Democratic Executive Committee. He also serves as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Bessemer, Alabama. Burks is associated with several organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mensa International, and Intertel.
Eric S. Burks is married to the former Karen Dunn. Mrs. Burks serves as the Circuit Clerk of the Bessemer Cut-Off. The Burks have two sons, Grover Blake Burks and Frederick Brock Burks.
