Effective Feb 3, 2020 Jefferson County Department of Revenue will be making an administrative change to pass a 1% non-refundable convenience fee (minimum $1.95) to the cost of a transaction when paying for motor vehicle transactions by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express. This change is the result of increasing costs to offer the option of credit card services as a convenient form of payment at the front counter for the citizens of Jefferson County. Payments made by cash or check at the front counter will not be assessed a convenience fee.

Notice to Internet Credit Card and E-Check users:

Effective August 1, 2006 convenience fees will be assessed at the rates listed below by the credit card/E-check service provider. The convenience fee will appear on your monthly statement and not on the motor vehicle/boat registration receipt*.

E-Check Transactions – Car Tag Renewals

  • $3.00 Flat Fee up to $9,999.00
  • $15.00 over $10,000.00
  • $5.00 Returned Check Charge

* The two dollar ($2) mail fee per metal plate and/or registration decal is a separate charge and will appear on the motor vehicle/boat registration receipt.

** Transaction is defined as any combination of motor vehicle registration renewals not in excess of $500. For example, if the total amount for a single or multiple motor vehicle registration renewal is more than $500 and less than $1,000, the credit card/E-check service provider calculates this as two (2) transactions. If the fee is between $1,000 and $1,500, this is considered three (3) transactions.
